THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY
WASHINGTON
The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the
NAVY UNIT COMMENDATION to
UNITED STATES NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY, DANANG
REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM
for service as set forth in the following citation:
For exceptionally meritorious service from 16 August 1966 to 30 June 1970 in providing logistic support to all United States and Free World Military Assistance Forces in the critical I Corps Tactical Zone of the Republic of Vietnam. The outstandingly effective response to the increased tempo of operations in connection with the rapid buildup of forces and increased demands for material and services was most expeditiously accomplished with only a minimal increase in U.S. Naval Support Activity, Danang personnel. By superior planning and maximum effort, vast quantities of vital war materials were delivered with minimum delay to operating units throughout the I Corps Tactical Zone in the face of enemy opposition, particularly mined areas. The Station Hospital responded magnificently to the increased number of admissions due to hostile fire, as well as the growing complexity of the type and extent of injuries due to the intensification of the war in the I Corps Tactical Zone. With the initiation of the program for Accelerated Turnover of U.S. Naval Assets to the Vietnamese Navy in 1969, U.S. Naval Support Activity, Danang assumed responsibility for the transfer of logistics craft to the Vietnamese Navy and the training of hundreds of Vietnamese Navy men in public works, communications support, and boat repair and maintenance. Through foresight, initiative and perseverance in conducting an orderly transfer of common support responsibilities to the U.S. Army from January through June 1970, U.S. Naval Support Activity, Danang succeeded in accomplishing the smooth transfer of an exceedingly complex and exceptionally well-functioning operation, all without the loss of a single day of support to the operating units throughout the I Corps Tactical Zone. The highly commendable performance of duty by personnel of U.S. Naval Support Activity, Danang and subordinate units was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service
