CATHERINE ROBERTS’ DREAM

Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 with a dream, literally a dream. Founder Catherine Roberts’ son Nat was deployed in Iraq. According to Catherine:

The dream was as vivid as real life. I saw a young man sitting on the side of his bed in the middle of the night, hunched over. The permeating feeling was one of utter despair. I could see his war demons clustered around, dragging him down into an emotional gutter. Then, as if viewing a movie, I saw him in the next scene wrapped in a quilt. His whole demeanor changed from one of despair to one of hope and well-being. The quilt had made this dramatic change. The message of my dream was: Quilts = Healing.

The model appeared simple: have a volunteer team who would donate their time and materials to make a quilt. One person would piece the top and the other would quilt it. I saw the name for this special quilt: it was Quilt of Valor, a QOV.

A Message from President Harry

Dear MRFA Member,

Previously, at our reunion, and in our correspondence, you were told that you would automatically be registered to receive a quilt from the Quilts of Valor organization as a member of the MRFA. There has been a slight change to this process. There is a new process that will now be in place.

Attached to this letter is a form for you, or your family member assisting you, to fill out. This form to apply for the Quilt of Valor award. This information on your form will be filtered down to your local QOV people who will make the presentation to you in your hometown. Please place in a stamped envelope and mail to the address shown on the form.

If you have already received a quilt, please disregard this process as you will only ever receive one quilt. This award is only available to a veteran, not to a family member or spouse.

We apologize for any confusion we may have caused and trust that this new process that we now have in place will make it easy for you to complete and to receive your quilt.

Thank you for your patience.

In the Brotherhood,

Harry
